Lawn care in America causes excessive water and resource wastage. Pampered lawns are reliant on intensive maintenance and non-native grasses, strain water supplies, pollute with chemicals, and deplete resources. It is very easy to adopt sustainable alternatives to restore ecological balance!
There are many things that you can do as an individual or a community that can contribute to the water and resource wastage problem in the maintenance of lawns. Any contribution is a big one in our books!
Water lawns during cooler parts of the day to minimize evaporation. Most of the time watering can be done in the evening or early morning. Shaded Areas should be watered 40% less than areas exposed to sunlight for long periods of time. This will minimize the amount of pesticidal runoff water and evaporation in your lawn. (THIS WILL SAVE YOU MONEY)
Use mulch around plants and trees to retain moisture and reduce evaporation. Utilize drought-tolerant grass species or native plants that require less water and maintenance. Native Grasses are the best for minimizing water usage and the best for obtaining the greenest grass with the least effort due to the fact the native plants are built for the environment. Use this website to find native plants and grasses that you can include in your lawn. Some drought-resistant grasses such as buffalo grass needs to be watered once a month compared to most other grasses being watered every week. Also, they require less-frequent mowing saving you time, money, and resources.
Regularly inspect your irrigation system for leaks, repair them promptly, and adjust sprinklers to avoid watering sidewalks, driveways, or other non-vegetated areas. In fact, about 50% of water used for lawn maintenance is wasted due to inefficient irrigation systems.
Minimize the use of chemical herbicides, pesticides, and synthetic fertilizers. Explore organic and natural alternatives or integrated pest management strategies to control weeds, pests, and diseases.
Collect rainwater from your roof using a rain barrel or similar system. This harvested rainwater can be used to water your lawn and plants, reducing the need for tap water. This is one of the most natural things you can do. When considering the purchase of a rain barrel, don't worry about the price tag as cost is not a major concern. This is because rebates are often offered, making it an affordable and environmentally-friendly investment. Check below to see if you qualify.
Allowing a lawn to go wild means intentionally allowing natural vegetation, such as native grasses, wildflowers, and other plants, to grow freely without regular mowing, trimming, or extensive maintenance. It embraces a more natural and untamed appearance, resembling a meadow or prairie rather than a traditional manicured lawn.
Spread awareness among friends, family, and neighbors about the importance of water conservation and sustainable lawn care. Share your experiences, success stories, and practical tips to inspire others to adopt environmentally friendly practices.

Garden Equipment Using Gas Produces Up to 5% of Our Country’s Air Pollution
Lawns Use 10 Times More Fertilizers Than Agricultural Crops
80 Million Pounds of Pesticides and Herbicides Used by Lawn
Approximately 50% to 70% of Water is Wasted Due to Inefficient Irrigation Systems Overwatering
Lake Travis is Only at 40% Capacity Due to Drought
Hoses Can Use Up to 1500 Gallons of Water Per Hour Used
